Alberto Fujimori is going back to jail. Per a Wednesday announcement from the Peruvian Supreme Court on its Twitter account, the former president will resume his 25-year sentence for various human rights abuses committed during his tenure.
Fujimori already served 12 years before being granted a pardon by then-president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski for medical reasons. The 80-year-old was recently readmitted to the hospital due to his persistent heart problems that include heart arrhythmia, or an irregular heartbeat.
According to judges, an arrest warrant was issued for Fujimori on Wednesday. He is still in the hospital and his representatives have said that a return to prison would be akin to a death sentence.
His daughter Keiko Fujimori, who is the political party leader for Popular Force, told the New York Times that the lift on her father’s pardon is an example of “persecution against the family.”
Fujimori’s original sentence stemmed from his often criminal response to opposing leftist groups, the Shining Path and the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, which violated international law. Much of his 10-year presidency from 1990 to 2000 was defined by his war against the opposition groups that often committed terrorist attacks themselves in retaliation.
