At least 17 people were killed when a passenger bus fell into a ravine in Peru’s central Junin state on Monday.

The bus left Huancayo for the jungle city of Pichanaki when it fell over 300 feet into the Tarma river in Chanchamayo province. According to the driver, who survived by jumping from a window just before the impact of the fall, the brakes on the bus failed.

“I know the route well, but the brakes failed. I drove like that for almost 700 feet,” the driver told Andina.

Fifteen injured passengers were transferred to a hospital in the nearby San Ramon district.
