Ancient cemetery from the Mochica culture discovered in Chiclayo An ancient burial ground that is presumed to have belonged to the Mochica culture (800 – 1000 AD) was discovered at an archaeological dig site in Chiclayo this week. Édgar Bracamonte Lévano of the Valle de Lambayeque Archaeological Project announced the findings of 32 graves that were adorned with decorations and spiritual offerings. “The importance of the cemetery is evident by the number of tombs and their density, also the number of banquets that were given,” the lead archaeologist told Andina news agency. Costumbres pisco wins gold prize at National Pisco Festival in Peru The best piscos that Peru has to offer were on display at the 24th annual National Pisco Competition. This weekend’s National Pisco Festival began on Friday and the prizes for the best pisco in the country were handed out during a ceremony that same day. Arequpia’s own Rico Corporation, which makes the pisco brand Costumbres, won the gold prize at Friday’s hotly contested awards show. Pair of 3,000 year old sites dug up in Cusco Peru’s immense wealth of buried artifacts has been more evident than ever this week. Just a few days after an important discovery at the Chan Chan Ruins, Peruvian archaeologists announced that they unearthed a pair of sites in Cusco that could date back 3,000 years. The recent excavations came at the Marcavalle site in the middle of Cusco where researchers say they found a teenage boy was buried just 40 centimeters underground, among other discoveries at the two sites. Pre-Columbian statues found in the Chan Chan Ruins Archaeologists discovered 19 different statues at Peru’s Chan Chan Ruins, the largest pre-Columbian era dig site in the Americas. Each of the statues is expected to be more than 750 years old, according to the Ministry of Culture. The statues came from the Chimu Kingdom, which preceded the Incan Empire.
